Handicapped Ability Empowerment initiative (HAEI) was officially inaugurated in the year 2011 by Onyenuwe Sunday with cooperate affairs commission recognition. Before then, the NGO was existing with the name handicapped ability link foundation (HALF).
The organization was established to professionally address the issues of persons with disability in Nigeria starting from cross river state. Such issues include;
Handicapped ability empowerment initiative (HAEI) is a non-governmental, non-profit oriented organization registered for person’s living with disabilities (PLWDs) in 2011 with cooperate affairs Commission (CAC) Abuja.
HAEI was initiated by a physiotherapist, Oyenuwe Sunday, to ball PWLDs from the prison of disabilities. Since its inception, the organization has been providing disability services to PLWDs and their families using different models of disabilities ranging from provision of walking aids, establishing organizations of persons living with disabilities across the LGAs of Cross River State, celebration of the annual international day of the persons living with disability, organization of health promotion and education for PLWDs etc.
What is more, at the 2020 Annual General Meeting, HAEI management and the technical team decided to broaden its mandate to include people with special needs, especially the left-handed children in schools and communities in Nigeria. Having seen the rate and procedures of conversion of the lefthanded children to righthanded after much torture, while those children who insist on using their left hand always use the phrase ‘pardon my left’ before it could be accepted in the public event at family level.
HAEI is a platform where the Challenges of people living with disabilities are identified, assessed, analyzed planned, executed, monitored and evaluated.
